What Lengths Should a Family Go to Save a Life? - Anna was conceived as a bone marrow donor for her sister Kate. Originally it was just going to be taken from the placenta but when that didn t hold, Anna ended up being a long-term donor for Kate. By the age of 13, Anna had undergone several surgeries and transfusions. Now she is expected to donate a kidney to her sister. Now she will draw a line in the sand. She will fight this. What length should parents and siblings go to save a family member s life? What is ethical, moral, and legal? What is right for the person who has the disease? Picoult does not give us the answers but leads us through the journey of what one family, lawyers, and the courts go through. In the end, we must decide.I like how the narrative of the story switches from character to character so that we can get inside what each person is thinking and feeling. Picoult also throws in a few twists and turns to keep the story and plot going.Several people have recommended this book to me. I must admit I hesitated, blowing it off as chick lit. Boy was I wrong. This story is not superficial fluff, it deals with deep ethical issues and is well written. This is the first Jodi Picoult book I have read, but it is certainly not the last. I highly recommend My Sister s Keeper!
Another amazing Picoult novel - My Sister s Keeper is one of the best Picoult novels I ve read. I only recently heard about this author and have come to be a huge fan. Last summer I picked up Vanishing Acts and was so enamoured with the author s amazingly three dimensional characters and her beautiful writing style that I ve been on a mission to read any and all Picoult books. Since then I ve read Nineteen Minutes and The Tenth Circle. I just finished My Sister s Keeper last night and am just completely in awe. What a beautiful story of family ties and the grey areas of parenting. An awesome and heartbreaking twist at the end. On the surface this is a story about a girl, conceived with the purpose of giving her dying sister life-saving cord blood, wishing to be medically emancipated from her parents after one procedure too many. But there s so much more here as always in Picoult s novels. Picoult s skill is in drawing realistic and heartfelt characters. Her talent is unmatched when she is illuminating all the shades of grey that define domestic relationships.
Phenomenal Book - This is definitely a must read. My sister read it first and passed it along, the subject is so gut wrenching and really pulls at the heart strings. This was the first book I read by Jodi Picoult, and have since gone on to read others...amazing author, I would recommend this book in a heartbeat.
Heartbreaking - This is an amazing story. The two sisters share a great bond, but it becomes a bit rocky when Anna believes she should be able to make her own choices about her body. Anna s older sister is very sick and needs Anna to help her survive. The story pulled me right in and it was hard to put down. The ending was very emotional.
Beautifully written. - This is one of those books that you start reading and can t put down. It deals with a controversial subject, but the author instantly draws you in from the first few sentences. It is at times sad, but there are also moments of humor. This is truly a great book, you won t want to miss it.
